Taking Care of Your Hearing Aids

Know how to properly care for your hearing aid.

Once you get your hearing aid you may have wondered what you did without it. This device can help you reconnect with the world around you, getting to enjoy and be part of the conversation again. Of course, you also want to do your part to keep your hearing aid clean and properly cared for. From the office of our Novi, MI, otolaryngologists and audiologists, here are some helpful tips to keep your hearing aid working and functioning at its very best,

Be Gentle

While modern-day hearing aids are made from the highest-quality and most durable material possible, it’s still important that you are gentle with your hearing aid whenever you are handling it. This will reduce the risk of bending or breaking any of its parts.

Wash Your Hands

Before handling your hearing aid it’s always a good idea to wash your hands before and after to prevent spreading any germs to your hearing aid and your ear.

Store It Properly

When you aren’t wearing your hearing aid you should store it in a safe, dry place that cannot be reached by pets or children. Moisture can wreak havoc on your hearing aid, causing serious damage. While some high-tech hearing aids are water-resistant, it’s still best to remove your hearing aid before showering. If your hearing aid does get wet, make sure to dry it off right away.

Keep it Clean

Especially if you are prone to earwax buildup, it’s important that you are cleaning the device regularly to remove earwax from building up on your hearing aid. Earwax can affect how well your hearing aid performs. You will need to gently clean both the microphone and receiver to rid it of any earwax. You’ll also need to replace the wax filter every once in a while. If you’re unsure of how to change the wax filter in your hearing aid, our Novi, MI, audiologists can show you how.
