What Is Tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is the inflammation or infection of the tonsils (lymph glands) at the back of the throat. It is a common childhood illness, and most children get tonsillitis at least once. Tonsillitis may be bacterial or viral. There are three main types of tonsillitis including acute, chronic, and recurrent.

What Are the Symptoms of Tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis has several symptoms, though not all need to be present for a diagnosis.

Sore Throat- A very sore throat is the most common symptom of tonsillitis. This may be accompanied by problems with swallowing, including pain, which may lead to a poor appetite.

Fever- A fever is an indicator of infection, and high temperatures should be watched closely and treated appropriately. If your or your child’s temperature is 103F or higher, you need urgent medical assistance.

Bad Breath-Tonsillitis may cause bad breath, and the smell is distinctive.

Neck Stiffness and Muscle Weakness- Along with a sore throat and a fever of 103F or above, neck stiffness and muscle weakness mean you need to seek medical attention quickly. Don’t hesitate to contact the Ear, Nose & Throat Consultants immediately if you or your child experience these symptoms. Your ENT's have branches serving the areas of Detroit, Southfield, Novi, Livonia, and St. Clair Shores, MI.

Aches- Someone with tonsillitis may experience headaches, stomachaches, or even earaches.

The appearance of the tonsils-Tonsils may appear red, swollen, and present with white or yellow spots. Your doctor can accurately assess what is considered tonsillitis and what may be another kind of throat infection.
